I guess the best document you should read is the alt.binaries.pictures
FAQ - OS specific info, providing a detail description on MS-DOS, Apple,
Amiga, Atari, VA/VMS, NeXT, UNIX/XWINDOWS picture utilities. You can get
the document via anon. FTP to silence.pi.NCTU.edu.TW(140.113.180.1) in
/FAQ/usenet/alt.binaries.pictures as
alt.binaries.pictures_FAQ_-_OS_specific_info or a.b.p_F_-_O_s_i

Please note that anon. ftp server at silence.pi.NCTU.edu.TW is still under
development, so some directories are empty.

Regards,
