ANNOUNCEMENT / CALL FOR PAPERS

First Virtual Conference on

EAST-WEST INTEGRATION IN CENTRAL EUROPE

\--------------------------------------------------------------/

TOPIC

The focus of this conference is the uneven process of political,
social and economic integration between East and West underway since
the opening of Eastern Europe. Eligible topics are not restricted
to economic issues only; relevant contributions from the perspective
of other social sciences are equally welcome. The process of
integration should be linked to transformation processes and refer
to its impacts on both sides of previously closed borders.
Comparative studies among regions or historical perspectives are
particularly welcome.

We invite contributions dealing with economic, social, and political
aspects of the integration process. Papers may deal with theoretical
and conceptual questions, may report empirical evidence, and/or discuss
policy reactions.

FORMAT

The conference will be held OVER THE NETWORK (conference
participants will remain in their respective locations, only their
ideas will travel) through CERRO-L or a newly created, special
purpose discussion group during the March 15-28, 1993 designated
conference period.

Authors are expected to make their papers available by March 8, 1993
in the format of a major wordprocessing program (MS-Word,
WordPerfect) and/or ASCII-format (separate format specifications
will be provided). Complete papers are required, although draft
versions are acceptable. Authors and participants are expected to
be accessible through electronic mail during the period of the
conference and to participate in the discussion.

A discussant will be assigned for each paper and will receive the
paper as soon as it is available to the organizers.

Final paper by March 8, 1993

economic development in Central Europe. For subscription to CERRO-L
send an electronic mail saying "subscribe cerro-l <your_full_name>"
[with your full name substituted] to LISTSERV@AEARN [on Bitnet] or

AFTER THE CONFERENCE

The organizers will attempt to publish revised versions of the
papers in an edited book, to integrate results of the virtual
conference as a special session of a real conference, or to edit a
special collection in a suitable journal. The organizers reserve
the right to include or reject contributed papers at any phase.

The organizers will prepare a paper that discusses the experience
with this form of a conference by May 1993.
