OCLC ACTIVATES NEW ILL SYSTEM DEC. 14

DUBLIN, Ohio, Jan. 14, 1993--OCLC installed its PRISM Interlibrary Loan
(ILL) system on Dec. 14, 1992.
The "hot cutover" from the ILL Subsystem to PRISM ILL was the third largest
installation in OCLC's history, ranking only behind the new OCLC
telecommunications network and the new online system, PRISM. It involved more
than 5,500 interlibrary loan departments currently doing more than 6 million
electronic ILLs a year.
"OCLC took extraordinary measures to make sure that the cutover would be as
ordinary as possible," said Dr. K. Wayne Smith, president and chief executive
officer, OCLC. "Overall, the installation went extremely well, and OCLC ILL
users are starting the new year with the enhanced capabilities of the PRISM
service."
The transition to PRISM ILL brings new technology and enhanced capabilities
to OCLC's interlibrary loan service. Among the enhancements are:
o Improved holdings displays
o Enhanced "tag" command
o Enhanced "new" command
o Improved spacing on work forms
o Transfer of additional bibliographic elements to work forms
o Improved lender string validation
o Fewer two-page requests through empty field suppression
o Improved spacing on query line (yes/no/cond/future date)
o Complete from additional statuses
o Simplified patron name/number search
o Improved searching of ILL transaction file
o Expanded call number search--available to borrower and lender
o Increased field sizes (borrower and lender notes, article, edition,
imprint, patron)
OCLC introduced online electronic interlibrary loan in 1979 with the ILL
Subsystem. Since then, libraries have conducted more than 41 million ILLs
electronically via the OCLC ILL Subsystem, the most widely used network for
interlibrary loans in the world.
OCLC is a nonprofit computer library service and research organization
whose computer network and products link more than 15,000 libraries in 47
countries and territories. (NC)
