When I went to Cooper Union I was told to do some project
that would make people conscious of the space in the class-
room -- a rather large, squarish room with columns in it.
Most people chose three-dimensional constructions or played
with light, but I made some sound-generating equipment by
using string and wire, and open cardboard boxes. The box
made a sound, of course, when the string was plucked. The
class experimented with the sounds with the lights on and
out, and I think my project was generally considered a
success, but the teacher may not have liked it; I think
he liked to be preeminent in the Zen of space, and I was
being a little far out for a neophyte.

I've since thought that the perception of space could be
adjusted by the addition of various simple sound-generating
devices to the environment. Or is this by now old hat?
