We in Chicago were fortunate enough to see Steve Badanes from the regenade
collaborative Jersey Devil discuss the trajectory of his work this evening.
It was telling that no architecture school or foundation would sponser
his cogent and entertaining lecture and that we saw him in a neighborhood
bo-ho bar that unexpectedly sold out.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Jersey Devil, they - an evershifting
group of men and women, mostly from Princeton - live and work in an Airstream
and some tents while they build the houses and a few other types that they
design. They design based on climatic data, local building traditions
and labor, but they also have a really elegant and sophisticated aesthetic;
they invent much of their stuff, and avoid that dated Carter-era look.
Steve Badanes is teaching periodically in architecture schools now, doing
community based development design builds with his students (in the feild
of course), mostly on the west coast from what i understand, and if anyone
has a chance to see his work or work with him, i highly recommend it.
Also Jersey Devil have cool t-shirts (or would they be jerseys?) for only
$15.00, but i don't know how to get them.
