Matrix II
Conference on Research Degrees in Design and the Visual Arts
19 & 20 March 1993
Central St Martins College of Art and Design
The London Institute

The Matrix II Conference on research degrees in design and the visual arts
aims to promote postgraduate research activities and provide research
support through an interdisciplinary exchange of information and
experience. Organised by educators engaged in research degree activities at
prominent art and desgin centres, including the London Institute, the
Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of East London, and the
University of Northumbria, it is directed towards educators and students in
higher education currently engaged in, or wishing to embark upon, research
leading to M.Phil or Ph.D awards. To this end, the conference will include
[I] plenary sessions investigating the purpose of M.Phil. and Ph.D.
research degrees, particularly those based upon creative 'making' work,
[II] strategy seminars on promoting and structuring research degrees led by
experienced research directors and practitioners, [III] clinics offering
advice on research methods and problems, [IV] presentations of work in
progress from current projects and recent completions, and [V] a
publications distribution service and information display.

Matirx II will, in addition, mark the launch of the Art and Design Research
Network to carry forward the work of the conference. The averarching aim is
to provide channels of information, communication, and support for
practical research activity, and in doing so become a vehicle for the
dissemination of research models and experience amongst supervisors and
students. Efforts will be made to explore scenarios for the provision of
pyramidally organised research groups and for regional research consortia
to share experience from apparently disparate institutions. The Network
will also seek links with institutions in Europe and elsewhere.

Matrix II will take place on 19 and 20 March 1993 at Central St Martins
College of Art and Design, London, and will cost UK# 75. A limited number
of concessionary places are available upon request.

Bookings to: Matrix II, DALI ltd, Central St Martins College of Art and
Design, Southampton Row, London WC1B 4AP.
