"RUSSIA AND THE UKRAINE SQUABBLE OVER GAS"

(Moskow, sn/dpa): The quarrel between Russia and the Ukraine about the prices
and deliveries of gas remains yet unsettled. The news agency Interfax
announced on Saturday (03/13) that a conversation between the heads of state of
Russia (Viktor Tschernomyrdin) and the Ukraine (Leonid Kutschma) produced no
positive outcome.

As a result, fees for the transport of Russian gas through the Ukraine and the
future price for Russian gas deliveries to the Ukraine remained unclear. This
week, representatives out of Moscow and Kiev intend to resume discussion.

The background of the conflict includes the debts of Kiev to the Russian
state enterprise GAZPROM amounting to 165 billion Ruble (nearly 3 billion ATS)
for gas deliveries.

Russia had risen the prices and wants to orient them on the world market. Since
that decision has been made, Kiev has threatened to likewise mark up fees for
gas transport. Nearly 90% of the Russian gas supply to Western Europe runs
through pipelines in the Ukraine.
