Re: ART: ...and Craft.

Folks,
Just a few blatant opinions for Monday Morning regarding Craft & Art:

Art may be "ABOUT" communication, particularly communication of the artist's
perception of the nature of mankind and one's place in the Universe, but the
activity (I've heard it said) of Art is a personal search using materials which
obtain/contain meaning(s) important to the artist in the expression of his/her
ideas about the nature of self/existence. There may or may not be any "CRAFT"
involved in this expression, craft being the manipulation/use of the materials
in a way that shows a mastery and understanding of said use, which also keeps
in mind tradition, growth, exploration, permanence, beauty, finish, et cetera -
these latter may have no importance whatsoever to the artist involved in the
personal search for meaning, although, in most cases, the results (or RECORD)
of the personal search may be judged - by others- on those matters. This
may lead one to suggest that ART and ARTWORKS are two separate and perhaps
disconnected concepts (Iwould agree) and that craft in art is irrelevant to
the concept of art but important to artworks, particularly when owned by some-
one other than the creator.

That was fun, ey?
