Dear Joe, Elmer and other interested parties:
First of all, I should explain that the Archives of American Art is not
part of the National Archives. We are a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution
and are housed in the National Museum of American Art- Portrait Gallery
building near the Gallery Place metro stop on the red line.
The Archives of American Art was founded in Detroit in 1954, and became a
bureau of the Smithsonain in 1971.
The collection contains more then
ten million items, including; correspondence, diaries, business papers, photos,
sketch books, journals and other materials relating to artists,
art institutions, collectors etc. We also have over 3000 audio and video inter-
views.Today, the AofAA has branch offices in Boston, Detroit, L.A. and
New York city.Access to the catalog is available through the Research Libraries
Network(RLIN) Micro film is available through interlibrary loan from the Detroi
t office.
The papers of several other artists (including a series of interesting
letters from Bernard Leach to Warren Mackenzie.) and I just discovered
a wonderful film Leach shot of Hamada which is located at THE HUMAN STUDIES FIL
M ARCHIVES IN THE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY-I'll have to go down there and see
it some day! Any way do check RLIN and contact me via the BBS or super-slo-
snail mail.
happy researching!
