MILLS COLLEGE
CCM COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College is accepting
applications for public use of its facilities for composition,
research, and experimentation. The purpose of the Composer-in-
Residence Program is to encourage interaction and exchange between
the CCM and the Bay Area artistic community. This is accomplished
by offering two short-term residencies every academic year, one in
the Spring and one in the Fall. Residencies may take the form of
research using the unique facilities of the CCM, recording projects
for documentation of a composer's work, or development of a com-
position which might include collaboration with CCM staff and
students. The residency concludes with a performance, lecture, or
demonstration which is open to the public. Composers-in-Residence
receive an honorarium of $250 at the end of the residency.

The facilities at CCM include an analog/digital synthesis studio,
a tape splicing and dubbing studio, a fully equiped 24-track
recording studio, and a multi-station computer music facility which
includes Macintosh, Amiga, and NeXT computers. Available software
includes Sound Designer, CSound, MAX, HMSL, an algorithmic compo-
sition language developed at CCM, and Sound Hack, a package of sig-
nal processing utilities also developed at CCM. During residencies,
composers are required to reserve studios and equipment at least one
week in advance of their use. CCM staff and graduate assistants are
available on a limited basis for technical assistance.

Proposals will be considered by CCM faculty and staff, and acceptance
will depend upon the availability of facilities and other criteria.
The proposal should be a brief 1 or 2 page description of your project
with equipment requirements and approximate length of residency indi-
cated. Experimental and educational work is encouraged. If a project
is accepted, the user will be required to sign a liability statement
to the effect that they are responsible for all equipment used.

Deadlines for proposals:

for FALL residencies - July 1st
for SPRING residencies - December 1st

Applicants will be notified by mail of the status of their proposal
no later than two months after the proposal deadline. Send all proposals
