MEDIA PRODUCERS, SCHOLARS AND ACTIVISTS TO GATHER IN CUBA IN DECEMBER
<<Update: Gabriel Garcia Marquez tentatively scheduled as keynoter>>

The 1993 Union for Democratic Communication (UDC) will hold its annual
conference in Cuba on Dec. 2-6. It will be hosted by the International
School of Film and TV, located just outside the town of San Antonio de
los Banos, 20 miles southeast of Havana.

The conference theme is "Media Culture & Popular Hegemony: A Pan
American Dialogue." Bilingual panels on Cuban film, TV, radio, music and
print media will be featured along with panels and workshops organized by
UDC participants.

The Union for Democratic Communication is a ten-year-old group of
communication researchers, theorists, educators, journalists, media
producers, policy analysts, and media activists. UDC is dedicated to
the critical study of communication; the production and distribution of
democratically controlled and produced media; and the development of
democratic communications systems.

Conference participants will stay at the school's faculty apartment
complex and eat in the main dining room. Conference costs are $200 for
room and meals at the school (Dec. 2-6) and a $100 registration fee,
which covers translators, cultural events, keynote speaker and ground
transportation.

The educational mission of this conference makes it legal for UDC to hold
such an event in Cuba and for U.S. citizens to attend, despite the on-
going U.S. blockade. Educational activities based on the free exchange
of information are exempt from Treasury Department blockade sanctions.
