Re: Practicing Arts Program at Berkeley---Saved For Now!

Architecture and engineering were, of course, initially one profession,
and more art than science, and design is a task that transcends
disciplinary distinctions. An interesting question is implied in Howard
Lawrence's point about the strongly visual aspect of architecture, which
is true of bridge and auto design as well, but perhaps less so of other
engineering.

Two interesting books on the subject are Peter Rowe, Design Thinking, and
Eberhardt Rechtin, System Architecting: Creating and Building Complex
Systems. The former author is dean of the Harvard GSD and the latter a
professor of aerospace at one of the University of California campuses.
Both draw on many similar sources.
