Depuis les annees 70, annees du retour a soi, des "nouveaux
discours amoureux", de l'expansion mediatique de la psychanalyse, le
corps est devenu le lieu d'un questionnement prolifique. La parution
de la collection Corps et culture publiee chez Delarge et dirigee par
Michel Bernard, permet dans ces annees-la de theoriser les
representations culturelles et discursives d'un corps devenu
multiple par la meme, corps de la pedagogie, corps theatral, corps
parle et parlant de la psychanalyse, corps s'exprimant dans ses
manifestations qu'elles soient faites dans la ville, au milieu de la
foule, ou sur le divan. Le sujet des sciences humaines semble alors
s'incarner irremediablement. Cela faisait deja longtemps d'ailleurs
que l'entrecroisement de la pensee et de la chair avait envoye ses
ondes: Freud avait deja divise le sujet humaniste pour y creuser un
trou et y ancrer le desir.
Qu'en est-il en 1992, apres Foucault, apres Lacan, apres vingt ans
de pensee sur le feminin, la difference sexuelle? Dans les sciences
humaines, dans les arts, quels echos se sont fait entendre de cette
incarnation? Est-elle refoulee, oubliee, dejouee par les discours
meme de celles et de ceux qui cherchent a la saisir? Les livres sur
le corps (mystique, sublime, christique, masochiste, ecrit, peint,
regarde, regardant...) continuent de s'interpeller depuis les dix
dernieres annees, peut-etre est-il temps de s'arreter un instant sur
les enjeux de ces mises en discours du corps.
C'est donc specifiquement la tension entre le sujet, son corps et
ses lettres (a entendre dans un sens generique de representations
symboliques) que nous aimerions examiner de plus pres. Nous
invitons ainsi les participants a une reflexion qui se situera dans
une continuite par rapport aux questionnements des dix ou vingt
dernieres annees et qui posera les problematisations particulieres
accomplies dans les differentes disciplines et domaines de
pratiques et de recherches.

Since the 70's, the era of the return to the self, of new
discourses on love, of the expansion of psychoanalysis in the media,
the body has become, at least in the francophone world, the locus of
a prolific questioning. The publication, in France, of the collection
"Corps et culture" (Body and Culture), edited by Michel Bernard,
allowed a new theorisation of cultural representations of a body
which, henceforth, became polymorphous: the pedagogical body, the
theatrical body, the spoken and speaking body of lacanian
psychoanalysis, bodies telling their stories in street
demonstrations, in the middle of a crowd, or on the sofa of analysts.
The intersection of mind and body, begun almost a hundred years ago,
has had powerful repercussions for the humanist subject, which
Freud divided and made hollow, creating a hole in which desire was
anchored. The subject of the human sciences seems to have
undergone a metamorphosis: it is incarnated and irremediably so.
Where have we arrived in our questioning, in 1993, after
Foucault, after Lacan, after a twenty-year long elaboration of the
feminine, of sexual difference? In the human sciences, in the arts,
what echoes of this incarnation have reached us, through space and
time? Has it been repressed, forgotten, by-passed by the very
discourses of those, men and women, who are endeavouring to grasp
it? For the last ten years, books on the body (mystical, sublime,
christic, masochistic, written, painted, seen, seeing...) have been
forming an unceasing network of interpellations. Perhaps it is time
to pause and reflect for a moment on the implications of these
various discourses on and of the body, of its passage into the
symbolic.
It is therefore the tensions between the subject, its body and its
"letters" (to be understood in the generic sense of symbolic
representations) that we would like to examine closely. We are
inviting the participants to join in a reflexion on the body and its
words, a reflexion which will both assess the work accomplished in
the past ten or twenty years and continue it, by an exploration of the
particular issues central to the practice and research of various
disciplines.
