This is the official request for discussion on creation of a new newsgroup,
the desirability of which has already been discussed at some length in a
mailing list called "lighting", maintained by Jonathan Hardis at NIST
(lighting@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). The consensus of that group (which has about
150 subscribers) is that a newsgroup is desirable, because each user has
more control over how and when to read the postings to a newsgroup than
to a distribution mailing list. It is felt that the current traffic on the
mailing list would substantially shift to the newsgroup, where the
discussions would benefit from the input from a wider audience.

The object of sci.lighting is to provide a forum for the discussion of all
aspects of the science and art involved in the creation of lighting methods
and solutions for safe, productive, and enjoyable use of the built
environment, and in theater and film and related fields. The term "built
environment" includes not only architecture, but also transportation media
such as roadways and aviation-related construction. This statement is
intended to be as broad as possible in its inclusion of all topics related to
natural and manufactured light. A representative list of some of the broad
categories of topics which would be appropriate for discussion in
sci.lighting follows. The fact that a topic does not appear on the list does
not indicate that that topic could not be discussed.

Eye, vision and visibility
Color
Manufactured light sources
Daylight availability/application
Psychological and nonvisual concerns
Luminaires
Control strategies/technology
Quantity and quality assessment
Light and energy conservation/management
Lighting economics
