OCLC REFERENCE SERVICES AVAILABLE
AROUND-THE-CLOCK AROUND THE WORLD

DUBLIN, Ohio, Sept. 13, 1993--OCLC Reference Services are now
available 23 hours a day Monday through Saturday, and 20 hours on
Sunday.

The FirstSearch Catalog, The EPIC service, and Electronic Journals
Online can be accessed through the Internet from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Monday through Saturday, and from 6 a.m. Sunday to 2 a.m. Monday, U.S.
Eastern Time.

The services are available through other telecommunications systems
from 3 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from noon
to midnight, U.S. Eastern Time.

Later this year, OCLC will offer its Reference Services 23 hours a
day, seven days a week through all telecommunications methods.

"One of the most important things we can do for libraries around the
world is to extend the hours of operation of OCLC online systems,"
said Phyllis B. Spies, OCLC vice president for marketing and sales.
"The extension of Reference Services hours helps us realize our
mission of furthering access to the world's information."

The new hours of availability will be particularly helpful to users in
Europe and Asia. In London, OCLC Reference Services are available all
day except from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday
from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. In Tokyo, the system is up all day except from
4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8
p.m.

Prior to the Aug. 28 extension, OCLC Reference Services were available
114 hours each week. Now Reference Services are available 158 hours
each week over the Internet, and 138 hours each week using other
access methods.

As a result of the change, OCLC's PRISM Keyword Searching feature,
which uses Reference Services indexes, will be available beginning at
4 a.m. instead of 6 a.m., its previous start-up time.

With 23-hour availability, databases will be updated "live"--while the
system is available to users. "This will not mean any significant
change from a user's perspective," said Mike Teets, OCLC online
systems section manager. "In general, it will help us to keep our
databases more current."

OCLC is a nonprofit computer library service and research organization
whose computer network and services link more than 17,000 libraries in
47 countries and territories. (RM)
