On the Viet Memorial--
I knew May Lin (she pronounced in "Mai") when we both taught summer
school at Phillips Exeter. Even dated once or twice. During that time she
was FRANTIC because of the grief critics and congressional busybodies were
putting her through about the monument, which was not "American" enough, not
optimistic enough. I assumed that most of it was racism, she being of Asian
extraction. I do know it made her miserable for a chunk of her life
