PREAMBLE
Firstly, congratulations to our colleagues in Sydney. Historically,
the Olympic Games has provided a strong impetus to local design.
At some time in the near future perhaps some of our Australian
friends may like to comment on design developments related to
the Olympic games.
Secondly, a reminder about *communication* with IDFORUM. Any and
all messages sent to IDFORUM@xxxxxxxxxxxx are automatically
sent to all readers of the list (this includes the use of the
*REPLY* option that your version of listserv may offer). Please
only use this address/option if you want all of us to read your
message.
Requests to suspend mail (such as the SET NOMAIL command), to
subscribe or unsubscribe to the list must be sent to;
LISTSERV@xxxxxxxxxxxx
The instructions should appear on one line in the body
of the message (NOT just on the *SUBJECT* line.)
Messages for the list manager (Maurice Barnwell) or information
to be included in the IDFORUM newsletter should be sent to;
GL250267@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I hope that that clarifies the process of communication.

Managing Design in a Single European Market
===========================================

A PhD Study at the University of Central England in
Birmingham, UK. by John Law, Senior Lecturer in Industrial
Design.

The deregulation of Europe has presented many manufacturers
with both challenges and opportunities when designing products
for a pan-European market. This study is addressing the question
of how the implementation and management of design policies can be
reviewed and seeks to establish a link between 'method of approach'
and the successful development of new product identities.

Comments and contributions are welcome from those with an interest
in this field, particularly in the areas of forecasting market
trends and recognising factors which influence market adoption of
new products within a European context.

HI-TECH ELECTRIC VEHICLES CONVERGE ONCE MORE FOR ALTERNATIVE
ROAD RALLY AND EDISON ELECTRIC GRAND PRIX

LOS ANGELES...The International Electric Grand Prix Association
(IEGPA) annnounced plans for encore runs of both its record-
breaking Alternative Road Rally and it's world's first Grand Prix
Race for electric race cars.

Friday through Sunday, April 8,9, and 10, 1994 are the dates set
aside for the 1994 Alternative Road Rally, which promises to be
the world's largest ever gathering of alternative energy
vehicles. Starting in Los Angeles, and traveling to Anaheim, then
on to Long Beach, the Road Rally will test the mettle of some of
the world's finest and most advanced electric and alternative
energy vehicles through the daunting traffic and road conditions
of Southern California.

The next Saturday, April 16, finds electric formula race cars on
the legendary course of the Long Beach Grand Prix, as they
compete in the second annual Edison Electric Grand Prix. As many
as a dozen formula electric race cars will compete in the 30
minute timed race which will occur on the program of the
nations's second largest motor sports event.

The events follow close on the heels of two previous noteworthy
IEPGA competitions. In October, 1992, the non-profit group held
the largest gathering of alternative energy vehicles in American
history as over 70 vehicles from as far away as Switzerland,
Canada and Denmark converges on Southern California for a
competitive road rally. The rally vehicles traveled from Veterans
Stadium in Long Beach to Santa Monica College to the Rose Bowl to
the National Orange Show in San Bernadino over the course of four
days. In April, 1993, the group held the debut Edison Electric
Grand Prix, the world's first ever grand prix race for electric
formula racers. The event featured five formula electric race
cars, and was won by an electric Indy car.

The 1994 Alternative Road Rally will travel through 21 cities
bringing the message that alternative energy transportation is
here now and ready to go to work to reduce smog and greenhouse
heat. The competition, which requires all participants to obey
traffic laws, will judge vehicles not only on best course time,
but also best acceleration, best endurance, and best energy
efficiency. A $5,000 prize will go the winner of the electric
commuter car class. The event will provide the public with a
chance to see the very best electric and alternative energy cars
the world has to offer, as well as to ride in and drive them.
Electric cars average over 50 miles on a charge, while 90% of all
Californians travel less than 40 miles per day. Each stopping
point along the rally route will also feature a chance for the
public to see the cars up close and speak with the drivers and
owners, to ride in and drive electric cars, and to see a wide
range of exhibits and displays pertaining to alternative
transportation.

The 1994 Edison Electric Grand Prix will demonstrate that not
only are electric cars environmentally safe, but fast and fun,
too! Able to reach speeds of over 100 mph, the competitors in the
event at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will be testing
technologies which can directly benefit the development of better
electric street cars. Some of the electric racers are converted
formula cars, others have been built from the ground up. All are
able to enter the pits, swap out battery packs and head back out
on the track in less than 20 seconds. A purse of $5,000 will go
to the winner of the 30 minute race. The Edison Electric Grand
Prix will also feature an electric transportation trade and
display in one of the Grand Prix exhibit halls, providing the
200,000 visitors to the event the chance to find out more about
electric racing and their electric driving future.

The International Electric Grand Prix Association is a non-profit
organization dedicated to cleaning the air we breath by promoting
the research, development, and marketing of electric and
alternative energy vehicles. Past sponsors of IEGPA events have
included Southern California Edison, the U.S. Department of
Energy, TRW, Lockheed, AQMD, Green MotorWorks, and many others.
