Gopher Server Announcement
Monday, October 18, 1993
OERI is pleased to announce a new Internet Gopher server, which
provides public access to education research, statistics, and
information about the U.S. Department of Education and its
programs. The server can be accessed at "gopher.ed.gov" starting
Monday, October 18, 1993.
As is customary with new Gopher servers, ours is experimental and
under construction. However, it is starting life with a collection
of over a thousand documents derived from the OERI Toll-Free
Electronic Bulletin Board, including announcements, bulletins,
directories, program descriptions, full-text publications,
statistical tables and charts, and other information produced by
OERI-funded programs:
* National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
* Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)
* Education Research and Development Centers
* Regional Educational Laboratories
* National Diffusion Network (NDN)
* Eisenhower National Clearinghouse for Math and Science
* Star Schools/Distance Learning
* Library Programs
The Gopher server also includes a complete ED telephone directory
in CSO Nameserver format, information on upcoming events and
funding opportunities, and pointers to other OERI-funded Internet
resources.
Our initial offering focuses on making information available in
basic, widely accessible formats. Textual materials and
statistical tables are presented in ASCII text format. Graphics are
presented in CompuServe's Graphic Interchange Format (GIF) (tm).
Files intended for transfer are compressed in ZIP format.
We plan to expand the content of the Gopher server during the
coming year to include searchable databases of project
descriptions, statistical tables, research results, programs and
practices, and resource directories, as well as a collection of
educational software based on the collection currently on the OERI
Toll-Free Electronic Bulletin Board.
