6 lanes would be enough to race in, but not enough to get boats up to the
start as well. Usually one or more additional warmup lanes are included
for rowing up the course. Also, a road running along the warmup lanes
allows coaches to coach via bicycle rather than from launches, whose wakes
would render the course unusable.
