Sandy,

I teach interactive multimedia, along with several interdisciplinary
Art + Technology classes, Cyberspace classes, etc. I also co-direct
the Visual Arts Computer Lab, and consult with the College of Fine
Arts Computer Lab, among others. My training at U of M (MI) and Yale
were in graphic design, and like you, I have had years of corporate
experience, most recently at Apple. I am currently finishing a 2year
residency in Virtual Environments at the Banff Centre for the Arts in
Canada. Seems I need to go to Canada or "3rd world" countries to
get access to VR.

As funding in the arts is always a problem, I thought I'd look into
possibilities in an RTF Dept. As it turns out, your very institution is
looking for such a person and I understand I am on the short list.
If you see my name posted around the School of Comm. for a
lecture, please come and bring other interested parties. Perhaps
you could post the lecture when/if it happens.

I am lucky to also be in a rich environment of people who share
my interests and expertise. As with your institution, we hardly knew
each other existed, but have now become a sort of loosely-knit
community. The biggest lesson I have learned in actually creating
several labs from ground zero is that you just have to make it happen
for yourself. There are no institutional mechanisms to bring us together.
The interdisciplinary rhetoric exists, the funding and action do not.
University traditions and structures in fact get in the way more often
than not. My advice is to not depend on anyone for leadership, but
become that leader. It's tough going, I know, but things happen
that way.

Let me know who among the Design/Art faculty is interested in
crossover efforts in electronic technologies, and I'll be sure to contact
them when I visit. Thanks.
