FIRSTSEARCH TO BE AVAILABLE IN SCANDINAVIA

DUBLIN, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1994--Bibliotekstjanst (BTJ), the central
bibliographic utility for Swedish public and school libraries,
will distribute The FirstSearch Catalog, OCLC's online reference
service, to libraries in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.
BTJ is also the distributor for OCLC's PRISM Cataloging and
Interlibrary Loan services in Sweden.

In February, 16 libraries of various kinds--including public,
academic, and corporate--will try out The FirstSearch Catalog
before it becomes available to all Scandinavian libraries in
April. They are:
Telia AB, Sweden
University College of Karlskrona, Sweden
Novo Nordisk, Denmark
Goteborg University, Biomedical Library, Sweden
Lund University, Sweden
University of Umea, Sweden
Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
City Library of Stockholm, Sweden
City Library of Partille, Sweden
Chalmers University of Technology Library, Sweden
Uppsala University Library, Sweden
Stockholm University Library, Sweden
Royal Institute of Technology, Electrum Library, Sweden
The National Swedish Nature Conservancy Department, Sweden
Institute for Energy Technology, Norway

"By marketing The FirstSearch Catalog, BTJ confirms its role as
the leading Scandinavian company in the field of information,
electronic data processing, and the distribution of media and
furnishings for libraries," said Goran Eliasson, managing
director, BTJ. "With OCLC as a partner, we are confident
that BTJ's customers will continue to have the edge on the
development of modern information technology."

"BTJ has an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality
products and services to libraries," said Phyllis B. Spies, vice
president, marketing and sales, OCLC. "We are pleased that BTJ
is making FirstSearch available to libraries in Scandinavia."

FirstSearch, OCLC's online reference service designed for library
patrons, provides access to over 40 databases, including
WorldCat, the 29 million-record OCLC Online Union Catalog. Its
menu interface allows patrons to move easily through the online
search process in just a few simple steps, without training or
online searching experience.

BTJ, which employs 320 people, is a shareholding company whose
activities are directed toward libraries. The Swedish Library
Association is the principal shareholder. BTJ sells and develops
products, services, and technology in the field of media and
information. Annual revenues total some $70 million from the
sale of library bound books, subscription services, local library
systems, bibliographic databases (online and CD-ROM), library
furniture and supplies, and large-scale laser printing. BTJ is
also a publishing house for readers' guides and vocational
library literature.

OCLC is a nonprofit computer library service and research
organization whose computer network and services link more than
17,000 libraries in 52 countries and territories. (NC)
