Nevermind the public in general, let's take our public officials.
I heard California Assemblyman Willy Brown in a radio news spot
the other day. He was once again decrying the low salaries of
California teachers relative to other professions. I quote:

"Teachers should make as much as doctors, lawyers and
architects."

[insert howling belly laugh here]
which means they should make more than the puny average $25,000
per year new teachers already receive. A newly minted
architecture grad would be extremely lucky to find that kind of
salary for an entry level position. At one extreme, I personally
know of a firm that starts interns (after they work three months
for free) at a lowly $14,000. Willy Brown should hope he doesn't
get his wish.

That the public and public-appointed officials have no idea what
architects really do could be contributing to the devaluation of
architectural services. This is the same ignorance that
gives us the profession's "mystique."

B| Still when all is said and done, I think the benifit and the

Agreed. But would better public awareness mean a loss of
mystique? Would we no longer be treated to screen architects like
Charles Bronson and Alec Baldwin? ;-)
