The _Summer Institute for Urban Studies: Identifying Urban
Structures_ will be held in Mexico City from June 7 through July
23. The program is presented by Tulane University and the
Universidad Iberoamericana and combines fieldwork with a
lecture-seminar. Each summer, students from Mexico and the
United States will, together, form survey teams to examine
patterns of growth and change in a characteristic section of this
great metropolis. The specific components of the study will
depend on the interests and backgrounds of the participating
students.

This summer, we will investigate a roughly half-mile by 20 mile
area encompassing the path Corte's followed when he entered the
Aztec capital. This area is well documented and we will be able
to consider its present characteristics as a consequence of the
city's social, economic and cultural evolution. Complementing
the fieldwork experience, the lecture-seminar course will present
the efforts of scholars, planners and political leaders to
understand Mexico City and explore its future.

The cost of the six-week program is $2,650. This includes eight
Tulane University undergraduate credits, housing accommodations
with a Mexican family, breakfasts and laundry, medical insurance
and field trips. For further information, contact Professor
Stephen Jacobs at (504) 865-5389 or fax (504) 862-8798.
