Designing for a sustainable future in the built environment

and Conference Centre, UK

In association with FutureWorld 1994

Why this Conference?
--------------------
Since the energy crisis of the early 1970s the World Community has become aware
that the fossil resources of our planet are limited and need to be husbanded
with
greater care. More recently, the effects of the profligate use of these
fuels has been
recognised both with regard to atmospheric pollution and the global greenhouse
effect.

Meanwhile an awareness has developed that other resources including minerals,
are
being depleted and ecosystems destroyed at an accelerating and uncontrolled
rate.

World-wide, the building and transport industries are major users of our
planet's
resources and therefore designers and users of buildings and their environs bear
a
responsibility for this resource depletion and the consequences for
future generations.

This conference aims to begin the process of redeeming this situation by
addressing
the problem of "Designing for a sustainable future in the built environment".
This
will be achieved by the structure of the Programme offering formal presentations
during the morning sessions followed by Practitioner Poster Sessions
during the lunch
hour and Seminars and Workshops in the afternoons.

This Conference has been organised by the Department of Applied Energy at
Cranfield in conjunction with the Construction Industry Council and in
association
with FutureWorld 1994.

Cranfield University was established as a postgraduate university in 1969. It is
now
western Europe's largest academic centre for strategic and applied research.

Cranfield's aims are;

- to advance, disseminate and promote the application of learning and
knowledge
- to serve the needs of industry through postgraduate education and research

This conference demonstrates Cranfield's commitment to industry.

Conference Opens Monday 6th June
