INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CONFERENCE IN DELFT, THE NETHERLANDS

IN CELEBRATION OF ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY THE FACULTY OF INDUSTRIAL
DESIGN ENGINEERING ORGANIZES AN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE WITH
INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ENGINEERING:

IN SEARCH OF NEW FUNDAMENTALS

ON

JUNE 30 AND JULY 1
1994

AT

THE AULA CONFERENCE CENTRE
DELFT UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
DELFT - THE NETHERLANDS

Somewhere at the end of the 1960's, Functionalism, the gospel
that had inspired both modern architecture and industrial design
engineering for the largest part of the twentieth century, came
under attack from different sides, and after a slow
death-struggle collapsed as the generally accepted
design-philosophy of the industrialized world. For industrial
design this had far reaching consequences: Up till now, a new
system of unifying principles is prominently absent. A number of
different doctrines have presented themselves as a substitute,
but none of them have so far been able to gain general
acceptance. In practice, this has led to a more or less
anarchistic, but rather refreshing multiplicity of forms in
industrially produced commodities. However, from a theoretical
point of view, this situation has put the discipline in an
awkward corner: It is not exaggerated to state that at this very
moment it is impossible to differentiate good from bad design,
simply because of the fact that a clear cut and generally
accepted set of criteria is badly missing since the death of
Functionalism.

It is from this point of view that the Faculty of Industrial
Design Engi- neering of Delft University of Technology, has
organized in celebration of its 25th anniversary, an
international conference in which fourteen internationally well
known experts in the fields of design-theory and design-practice,
will try to shed some light on the question whether the contours
of a new unifying design-philosophy are becoming discernable, and
-if so- what will most probably be the most characteristic
elements of such a theory.
