Bauhaus

Was the Bauhaus really the origin of what became known as the
International Style? Or was the resultant shift toward 'modern
architecture' due to a number of social/political factors and to a
number of architecture movements or styles? Different sources seem to
put forward different opinions. Being an architecture student I have
little free time to explore this in more depth personally, but would
be interested to know what others think. My initial readings suggest
that many architects, and their 'movements' (de Stijl, etc), were
thinking similarly during the 1920's and the Bauhaus has in a way
taken credit for a shift in attitude due to the school being so well
known. Was this because it was an organised school, and consequently
we, in the late 20th C, can more easily identify with something
physical, as opposed to a way of thinking?
