DESIGN OF THE TIMES CONFERENCE
5 October 1994, North Stafford Hotel, Stoke on
Trent, Staffs UK
Design in the 1990s is taking on new responsibilities,
methods and directions. It is being driven by a far stronger
knowledge base. This conference addresses some of the
implications that this has for design research.

THEMES
Conference introduction
Researching the context
Research for management
Researching lunch
Research in Education
Researching the culture
Communicating research

The School of Design & Ceramics

The School has a unique combination for education in design.
Our BA (Hons) design course is one of the largest integrated
courses in Europe, with opportunities for 170 students per year
to specialise in audio visual communication, ceramics, electronic
media, glass, graphics, surface pattern, product design and photography.

At post-graduate level courses are offered in Design Management
(with a unique option for Craft Management), Ceramics and
Computing for Design. At the recent Young Designers show, three
of our students won top awards, more than any other university.

Design Studies Division

The Design Studies programme focuses on Design as a subject of
enquiry by concentrating on its locus in industry, commerce and
society. It seeks to enable students to analyse, appraise and
evaluate design and its influence in its widest possible context.

Design studies is taught throughout the degree course culminating
in the completion of Design Studies report by our final year
students complete. The breadth of design related subjects
researched is wide. Valuable contacts are often made and insights
gained, enhancing studio work and giving focus to the types of
jobs they will pursue on graduation.

WHY THIS CONFERENCE IS IMPORTANT

We are building a lively research culture within the School.
We seek to bring industry and academia together. We want to
demystify design. We want to show that design can be fun, serious,
wacky, peculiar, different, but also accessible, essential and
worthy of consideration.

SPEAKERS

Dr Rachel Cooper is the Head of the Design & Manufacturing
Strategies Research Unit at the University of Salford and is
co-author of a new book on design management. She is currently
undertaking design research programmes in Britain and the
United States.

Martin Hunt is a partner in the Queensberry Hunt Design Consultancy.
As one of Britain's leading ceramic designers, his work is in
production worldwide. The success of QH designs stems in part
from a critical understanding of how new lifestyle trends and
eating habits place new demands upon tableware.

Professor Derek Longhurst is the Dean of the School of Arts at
Staffordshire University and is a specialist within the field of
cultural studies.

Alan Topalian of Alto Design Management was acknowledged by the
CNAA as having 'probably the most comprehensive and widely
researched views on design management. Firsts in his work include
the analysis of design leadership and board level responsibilities
for design; teaching managers and designers together; and detailed
corporate design management case studies.

Dr Martin Woolley is Director of the School of Design Research at
the University of Central England in Birmingham and is pioneering
new uses of the Internet system for design researchers.

David Walker of the Open University is editor of the new Co-Design
Journal and initiator of CODE, the Consortium of Design Educationalists
and Practitioners.

James Woudhuysen, formerly of Fitch, currently works for the Henley
Forecasting Centre. A contributor to last year's Design Renaissance
Conference in Glasgow, and a writer on design futures, a key area
of interest is implications of new technologies upon design.
