Software

A question was asked about computer usage in design school. At Sydney Uni
we use Macintosh's for the undergrad (professional) architecture programs
as follows:

First year- Intro to Mac, wordprocessing (Word 5), spreadsheet & paint
(ClarisWorks)
Higher years- Structural analysis of beams, columns, frames (CStructures).
3D modelling (Modelshop). Various other bits and pieces in electives, such
as PageMaker.

The lab has about 20 Macs for a student body of 300 full-time undergrads,
which seems to be sufficient. Four full-time computer staff (= USA faculty)
plus one or two non-academic staff as system manager, etc.

Spontaneous student use is mainly wordprocesssing. A few students use some
for the various graphics apps, but that is fairly rare. The design staff
dislike computer drafting and so it does not pop up often in studio for
drawings, although there is a modest amount of graphics stuff done for
other sorts of presentations. The only studio master into CAD insists on
Autocad, which we have on Suns.

Hope this helps.
