PRESS RELEASE 3/8/94 United Kingdom

THE "PERSONNEL SPACE" PROJECT

Cheltenham's Department of Social Security offices (DSS) at have consented
to the development of a temporary sculptural installation to be sited at
their offices and reception area during the Cheltenham Festival of
Literature, October 1994.

This project is funded by the artist Mac Dunlop, and the Fine Art
department of Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education
(CGCHE), at Pittville Campus, Cheltenham.

The art work is being developed through the artist consulting with the
office staff and users of the DSS as to the nature of the work and
functioning of the place toward the making of objects and video work to be
installed there.

The art work is a development of the research being undertaken by the
artist in the Sculpture Department of CGCHE, which involves investigations
into the making and placing of art installations in offices, domestic, and
workplace environments, rather than galleries or museums.

The principal is to place and make art where people spend the majority of
their daily lives, rather than expecting that they must experience
contemporary art only in gallery and museum exhibition locations.

Following is a brief description of ideas regarding the installation of
artwork in an office environment:

Ideas:

To make objects to be placed in a specific place, which are inspired by the
staff themselves, their work, how it is managed, and what is being
produced.

To temporarily site these objects at the workplace without interfering with
the daily functioning of the office and its operations.

Time scale
The artwork would be placed in the office for the duration of the
Cheltenham Festival of Literature, beginning Oct.. 7th.

What it would entail:
This artwork depends on the artist having some contact with the workplace
involved. From this, the actual artwork forms, which then further develops
in accordance with the existing administrative and management structures of
the organization.

The unobtrusiveness of the design is crucial to the development of the
artwork and its use in my research study at C and G College, here in
Cheltenham.

It is important that this project involves people in an artwork: or
"installation", from its original inception to its final completion. The
work depends on the ideas which come from the "audience" as much as those
of the "artist".

sincerely

Mac Dunlop, MA. BA.
