Re: The Bauhaus

Hi Sean and Howard,

A couple other good works on the Bauhaus:

Franciscono, Marcel. _Walter Gropius and the Creation of the Bauhaus in
Weimar_. Urbana: (I think U. of Ill. Press), 1971.

Whitford, Frank. _Bauhaus_. London: Thames and Hudson, 1984. "World of
Art" series.

Also, you shouldn't overlook the influence of the DeStijl, especially
that of Theo van Doesburg, who took up residence in Weimar for a couple
years (there is some contention, I think, on whether he actually
lectured at the Bauhaus) in the early '20s. He swayed quite a few students,
causing much consternation on the part of Gropius, who was losing his
handle on the school, and Itten, who quit around the same time. In the
two or three books I've read on the school, I feel the influence of
van Doesburg, and DeStijl in general, are underestimated. This is really
just a feeling based on the changes that occured in the school; I haven't
backed this up with any research, so don't hold me to it!

Also, it has been a while since I've done any reading on the subject, so
please excuse any factual errors, though I think I've got it right in
general.

On the DeStijl:

Troy, Nancy J. _The De Stijl Environment_. Cambridge: MIT, 1983.

Also talks about TvD in Weimar.

Good Luck,
Mark
