Brian,

Thanks for asking.

My work with others members of Urban Deadline has covered a
spectrum of planning, design, construction, publicity,
organizing, hard labor, testifying in court, fund-raising,
research, teaching and jurying. Some projects lasted up to ten
years, some for only a few weeks or days. The work was
parallel to making a living, raising kids and doing what
everyone does. Not a big deal, once my family and I got used
to it.

But it needs to be said: there are always more requests for
help than we are able to meet. There is a limitless amount of
work to be done in this country and elsewhere. No architect
should ever complain that there is not enough work. But you
got to be ready to do whatever is needed and not wait for a
polite invitation. Architects are not considered to be easily
approachable by community groups and individuals.

For us, all this is about architectural education, our own and
that of the public, learning by doing. Much of the success has
been due to the desire of community members to make this work,
and we have learned more from them than they have from us.
And, we have tried to take our experience back to the
architecture schools when we get a chance by teaching and in
juries.

And, after a rough few years at the start, it has not been
difficult to make the economics work: to do both community
service and professional practice, to the mutual benefit of
both. I, for one, don't believe any community service work
should be done for pay; however, not all my associates agree.

We are scattered around the US, Europe and elsewhere now; a few
are still here in NYC; as far as I know the fifty or so who
have worked with UD are still at it each in his or her own way.
By the way, not all are architects -- we are a mixed bag:
planners, dancers, artists, journalists, writers, unaffiliated.

You don't need to read it but for your info I put together this
embarassingly long list of the projects I have worked on since
1968; it does not include all of the Urban Deadline projects.
