Just jumping in here.

I feel that where "intelligent CAD"/"Design Automation" has the greatest role to
play is in the domain of "design constraints". That is those items/aspects of
a design which may be specified as "limitations" on the design outcome.
There are basically two ways that this may be done - 1) generating possible
solutions which satisfy these constraints, and 2) evaluating design solutions
to check that they satisfy/meet the constraints.

This is howvers/however, only the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. The other,
probably larger part of the design process, is concerned with "goals" -
ill-defined
, difficult to specify objectives. Within the terms of design automation, it
primary role is to focus the designers attention to these goals, by struippingf
away the aspects of design which might be refered to as constraints. In
this way the designer's energies may be most appropriately applied to the
difficult parts of the design question.
