Re: FLW Imperial Hotel

John Young's comments on the Imperial hotel raises some interesting historical
questions. When the history of architecture is taughjt , the only engineering
which seems to be tracked is "structural engineering", There are a few
exceptions,
ie. the aqueducts. But, buy and large, it is a story of the evolution of
structural knowledge with little or no history of mechanical knowledge given.
Are there any good books out there which treat this history? I know
that there are great examples of "central heating" for entire cities -
Utrecht as a medieval example and NYC as a 19th century example. This sounds
like an outstanding alternative history to the usual architectural
metanarrative.
Is there anyone ourt there who is well informed on this subject?
