As an ideal, I would agree with the philosophy proposed by Roark.
Unfortunately, architecture (as well as other design disciplines) is not
necessarily a podium where the designer can make whatever he or she
desires. The client, as well as a lot of other "players" are involved. I
find a lot of finished construction bearing little resemblance to what was
intended. Ideals are necessary. But we should keep in mind who we are
designing for -- the client/users or ourselves (designer)? Sometimes it can
be both, but not always.
