``Catso,¡¯¡¯ a white cube of light made in 1967 by American minimalist James Turrell and recently acquired by Korean collector Paik Hae Young, is being displayed at her gallery home near Itaewon.

James Turrell is one of the most distinguished American artists working today who gained attention in the 1970s for the Roden Crater, an observatory made out of a land formation on his cattle ranch in Arizona.

``Catso¡¯¡¯ is one of his earliest pieces and was the result of extensive experimentation with light, phenomenology and cognitive psychology. Though sounding structurally simple, his light installations are remarkable in the way they shift the physical sense of perception. As described by art critic Robert Hughes in his book American Visions, ``his art happens behind your eyes, not in front of them.¡¯¡¯

With 1200 watts, the projection of light for ``Catso¡¯¡¯ is only switched on when visitors arrive due to its intense heat. All external light has been blocked off and the space is perfect for the meditative visit as Turrell intended.

Turrell was most recently commissioned to make light pieces in Japan for art house projects with Japanese architects. ``House of Light¡¯¡¯ was created in Niigata as a guesthouse for meditation with a moveable roof merging Turrell¡¯s light projection with the sky.

``We would like him to build similar houses in Korea, with a Korean architect. This we hope for very much,¡¯¡¯ expressed gallery director Yang Eun-hee.

The Paik Hae Young Gallery is near Itaewon Station on line 6. Visits can be made by appointment only. For more information call (02) 796 9347 or go to www.paikhygallery.com
