[design] dev, pres, demo

development, preservation, demolition

i just read this little neighborhood microweekly
paper for st. anthony area in downtown minneapolis
to realize that those beautiful silos on the river
are slated to be demolished in short order, and
the last public meeting was just held (had no
idea of it) about a block away, recently. there
is a time for comments but it ends on the 23rd,
basically a day away if trying to compose some
semblance of an approach - for why this brick
silo (images below) should be saved, in addition
to the 'historic' a-mill, on the left, which is
much less interesting, though probably much more
practical. there is no value given to these most
spectacular buildings, they're just in the way.
so i am going to write the planning commissioner
and developer and try to weigh the future value
of keeping the brick silo (the middle building
can go, as can the big white one, but to get
rid of the brick building would be a travesty,
in addition to the general massing). it makes
me concerned as it is likely nothing could do
anything to change the outcome, given how up
to now no voices have been heard loud enough,
in chorus, from the architecture establishment
about why these things do matter for urbanism
and development and business. across the river
there is a 100 million+ dollar building that is
simulating such industrial majestry, and such
a building could not be built today. and it
may not be habitable tomorrow, but it could
be used for a mixed-use variegated development
where it could become something more than just
plain-housing and restaurants. what, have no
idea (besides the ultimate retrofit condos).
any ideas appreciated. i wish people from the
list would write to the e-mail of the person
who is on the public planning though i imagine
few if any would write if not having seen or
experienced this area. so, i feel i have to
try to make some effort though it is grim...

here are images of a few mills across the river...
my favorite is an all brick mill, it is stunning...
