the multi-layered gypsum board provided the required fireproofing, i think, but who would have expected a plane (or other massive explosion) to pierce them?

had the stairwell core been a traditional concrete shear structure, it might have resisted the forces.

but the idea of stacking 110 wal-marts to save weight and money was too compelling ...
