Re: [design] WTC Collapse Briefing

bomb shelters...

i am wondering what your take on bomb shelters
is today, Michael. as i thought there was a time
during the cold war that this was a DIY defense
against nuclear armageddon, when nothing else is
possible on a federal level for civilian defense.
and in relation to WMD issues, it seems to be a
repeat, (masking tape and plastic sheeting) if
chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear
death plays itself out across human populaces...

do you see any corollary to today's issues, and
if taking bomb shelter designs/days in relation
to those, pros and cons, what may be likely in
terms of how such 'defenses' develop or fail to
materialize in dwellings. is it different now,
completely, or is it futile to even consider
in terms of DIY defense (if this is even a way
it could be considered, bomb/WMD shelters)..?

i like to imagine that things such as energy
innovations, net access, e-commerce portals,
and other things can coincide with strengthen-
ing dwellings from pollution, toxins, radiation,
and start to redevelop the concept of a house
or dwelling as a unit unto itself, not as a
part of a city which would protect against
these issues in its larger-scaled designs.
thus, dwelling as weather station, space
station, power plant, media broadcaster/
receiver, etc. or maybe the neighborhood
rather than house, neighborhood in relation
to city-scale, with issues such as WMD,
energy-efficiency/self-sufficiency, micro-
economies, network organization/community.
