Re: [design] question

the truth is that i really don't have any history around here - i've been
reading the list for about 8 months or so. during that time i've seen the
posts mainly dominated by a small set of people and never really saw a place
to fit in - or, honestly, didn't know if it was expcted for others to
participate. i'm still not entirely sure, but in any event...

i have no idea what's gone on - or any idea what the current state of the
list is in comparison with what has gone on. what i do know is that it seems
to be the clearest online exchange i have witnessed / participated in. i've
watched quite a few BBS style exchanges be born and die, mostly because of
some kind of problem with balancing exposure / access. i think there are a
lot of reasons that a list format really fosters a stronger exchange - and a
lot of that has to do with the restrictions / expectations of writing email
(that's a lot of / comparisons, i know - and none of them are all that
specific). shooting off a comment on a blog or bbs requires little attention
and because of the size of the audience often creates a kind of insecurity
that seems to make bragging and competition more common.

but if people do want something more, something more geared towards
'broadcasting' while things are in a bit of hibernation then it seems
reasonable to set up a space to do that. i don't think it has the potential
to offer a replacement. but i do think that the collaborative blog format is
semi interesting - but i don't think the 'comments' are really that
worthwhile. it's a format for throwing information out in to the open -
discourse is better handled with somethng else.

but what do i know? i just showed up.
