More on Hannah & Martin on Jerry Springer

Hi Heideggerians, a close friend of mine had this to say about the piece
on MH an HA in the Times (New York?). Thought you'd find it
interesting. lp

Why would Arendt who loved a anti-semite be the victim
of scorn in the philosophical community? It would almost seem that she
is looked down upon more than Heidegger. I find this upsetting. Is it
any different than the woman who loves and forgives a husband who is
sexist, or the person of color who associates with biggets and in some
cases even promotes their cause? I often don't respect such people but
at the same time one can't always blame or discount them competely. We
all know love and inter-personal relationships are complex things.
Most of us cannot say we've never loved someone who is basically anti
all that we stand for and are, or at least some of who we are.

Look down on Heidegger if you will for
being an anti-semite don't look down on Arendt for loving him, especially
when you philosophers love him or at least respect and read his work. It
seems very hypocritical to require all students of philosophy to read the
thoughts of this man and consider him to be so important in your field
and then look down on another philosopher for loving him.
