Dear Mr. Schneck,

You wrote

Heidegger claims die Kehre is first announced in 1930 - 3 years before =
his political engagement (or indeed before the NSDAP came to power).

I cannot confirm this latter reference to the Nietzsche lectures. I can =
only find the following in an English translation of the Spiegel =
interview (In "Martin Heidegger and National Socialism - Questions and =
Answers" Ed. Neske and Kettering, New York, Paragon):

'Heidegger: "After I resigned from the rectorate, I retreated back to my =
task as a teacher. In the summer semester 1934 I lectured on "Logic." =
In the following semester, 1934/35, I gave the first lectures on =
Hoelderlin. The lectures on Nietzsche began in 1936. All of those who =
could hear heard that this was a confrontation with National =
Socialism".' (p 51)

and=20

(Heidegger again) "In the winter semester 1944/45 ... I gave a lecture =
course entitled 'Poetry and Thinking' ... in a certain sense a =
continuation of my Nietzsche seminar, that is to say, of the =
confrontation with National Socialism." (p. 53)

On p. 62 there is a further reference to the Nietzsche lectures, but =
although it mentions a "change", it does not mention a "turn" (I do not =
have the German, only the English - is this eine Wendung, or eine =
Wandlung?) it does not mention National Socialism in connection with =
this.

There is no mention of die Kehre throughout, and if I have heard these =
statements correctly, they appear to say the opposite of your claim. =
The list of writers you have in mind may indeed be long, but my point is =
this - if die Kehre is not what they say it is, they are in some kind of =
error (albeit for a reason, one we might want to consider). This kind =
of argument is precisely why everyone has had their hermeneutical and =
forensic tweezers out looking for "the" "turn", before or after =
Heidegger's political engagement, in this or that work, in his =
"exaggerated voluntarism" or "quietism" (depending on who in your list =
you read). My contention is that you will understand die Kehre only if =
you realise it is AT work in every single work at least from Being and =
Time onwards (and actually a long time before), that Heidegger knew =
exactly what he meant by it, and was busy from the very "beginning" =
trying to bring it into the open and let it speak, and that if it has a =
link with his political engagement, then only in the most indirect way =
that cannot be illuminated by an enquiry into the political engagement =
itself.

If I have missed the reference you have in mind, I would be pleased to =
be corrected.

Hope this helps.

Laurence
