so hard to read mh without knowing german or el without knowing french.
in s and z, page 74/104, mh characterizes the modes of ready-to-handness as
"conspicuousness, obtrusiveness, and obstinancy" (auffalligkeit, aufdringlichke
it, and aufsassigkeit." he then says "but the ready to hand is not thereby
just _observed_ ..."
i am trying to research the various modalities of vision and light in mh's work
. is the word play cited above deliberate? is there some significance to
these auf- words that i as a non-german speaker can't cash in on?
[some significance to the word "observe"]
speaking of which, what's the deal with the prefix ver-? every footnote on it
states that "this german prefix is completely untranslatable and can have a
hundred million different meanings.
-- thanks,
mitch
p.s. does anyone know whether the british punk/new wave band "wire" had read
heidegger before releasing their album "pink flag". in "straight line" they
sing "oh unlust and the one-dimensional boy", showing off the marcuse. i
think that in another song they chant "god is dead" repeatedly.
