NEW DELHI: The department of education of Municipal
Council of Delhi (MCD) has said it is willing to
"facilitate" implementation of reservations in public
schools. The department has offered to tie-up with
public schools and provide them names of meritorious
MCD school students hailing from economically weaker
sections.

"Many of our students are very talented and have
tremendous potential. The department has prepared
lists of such students who would be deserving
candidates for admissions to public schools under the
quota system," said director (primary education), MCD,
Indira Yadav.

MCD's list comprises students who had been shortlisted
for scholarships after qualifying a merit test
conducted by the department. About 15,000 students
from classes III, IV, and V have been chosen. Students
who score above 65% in the term-end exam are eligible
to appear in the scholarship test. "The students are
selected after a double filtered process," said Yadav.

Officials add that taking "known" students would also
ensure that the quota is not misused by candidates who
manage to get fake income certificates.

The department will now be writing to the directorate
of education to make a formal offer. The issue is also
likely to be discussed in a meeting of MCD and
directorate officials to be held later this week.

"We have already informed senior officials at the
directorate about our proposal. The formal suggestion
will be sent this week," said an MCD official.

The concept originated from the practice followed at
Springdales (Pusa road), where the system of absorbing
MCD students is already in place. The school had
invited names of meritorious class V students from
neighbouring MCD schools earlier this month. About 30
candidates had been selected through a merit test for
enrolment in the mainstream under the 20% quota

Right Move
* MCD willing to offer its meritorious students for
enrolment in public schools under the 20% quota
* Officials say this will also prevent misuse of
reservations by those who manage to get fake income
certificates
