Admissions not a lottery: DPS
Education shouldn?t appear like a housing scheme, says
HC affidavit
Express News Service
New Delhi, November 2: The Delhi Public School today
told the Delhi High Court that it was opposed to the
idea of admission by draw of lots.
Responding to the court?s request for suggestions on
the admission process for nursery class, Delhi Public
School Society (DPSS) officiating secretary Sheila
Markan said in its affidavit: ??School education
should not be compared to or made to appear like a
housing scheme or selection of a lottery number.??
The bench of Justice D.K. Jain and Justice R.S. Bhat
have been hearing a petition filed by three parents
challenging a single-bench judgement of the court
which on January 12, 2003, had rejected the plea
against interviewing of children and their parents for
nursery admissions.
DPSS has stated that they do not subject children to
tests or interviews. The school stated that, instead,
they favoured a standard assessment based on
interaction with the child and his/her parents. They
asserted that ??the manner of assessment should be
left to the school itself??.
Terming admission by draw of lots as ??purely a game
of chance??, the school said it was not in the
interest of the child, institution or education.
Attorney General Milon Banerjee is likely to file his
suggestions in a week. The next hearing is on November
16.
Earlier, petitioners had suggested that schools follow
a neighbourhood policy and select students through
draw of lots
