HC pulls up DoE over 20% freeship

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday pulled up
the directorate of education for not implementing the
order to private schools, which were given public land
at throwaway prices, to provide 20% freeship to poor
students.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice B C Patel and
Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul sought to know how the
directorate issued orders to all the schools (and not
just those given cheap public land) to grant 20%
freeship to students from weaker sections of the
society.
"You have to justify what authority you have to issue
such an order to unaided public schools who were not
given cheap land," the Bench asked Delhi Government
counsel Avnish Ahlawat.
Even petitioner Social Jurists' counsel Ashok Agarwal
submitted that the directorate had complicated the
matter by issuing a general orde to all the schools in
April 2004 following the court’s order on
January 20 last year.
