Manmohan Singh has asked Union urban development
minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to work out a solution to
the problem of shifting industries in the Capital. The
PM?s intervention came following requests from senior
Congress leaders, including chief minister Sheila
Dikshit. Sensing that the issue could spin out of
control, Dikshit had written to the PM, seeking his
role in staving off a crisis. Left parties, too, have
opposed the relocation of industries.
Azad has been asked to work out a solution by
involving the stakeholders (industry-owners). The SC,
on May 7, had laid down a strict time-frame for
shifting of industrial units. The issue has now become
a bone of contention between Dikshit and her
detractors in the party
PM TELLS AZAD TO ADDRESS ISSUE ON A PRIORITY BASIS
(Daily Pioneer):: Staff Reporter/ New Delhi: Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh has taken congnizance of the
ongoing protests across the Capital by the owners of
industries. The Prime Minister on Monday called the
Urban Development Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad in his
office at the South Block and held a detailed
discussion with him. The meeting has come close on the
heels of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's
letter to Dr Singh to address the issue of industries
on a priority basis. The Prime Minister advised Mr
Azad to find a proper solution, keeping in the view
the directions given by the Supreme Court, (SC),
provisions of the Master Plan for Delhi and the issues
raised by the Government of Delhi and the owners of
the industrial units, a close aide of the minister
said. It may be recalled that on May 7 the Supreme
Court had laid down a strict time schedule of closure
of industrial units in the non-conforming areas. The
SC had also laid down a time-frame for enforcing this
decision. A senior official of the Urban Development
Ministry (UDM) said various teams constituted by the
Delhi Government to inspect and enforce the orders of
the SC, had so far visited over 9,000 units and
disconnected water and electricity and sealed the
premises of over 1,700 units. During the visits of the
team, thousands of industrial units were also found to
be closed by the entrepreneurs. However, in certain
localities, there have been cases of resistance from
the owners of industrial units. There have been
vociferous demands from various quarters including
political parties for regularisation of the industries
in Delhi. Simultaneously, the Delhi Government has
undertaken a scientific and comprehensive survey of
the 24 industrial clusters which have more than 70 per
cent concentration of the industrial units. The survey
is likely to be completed in the next three months.
The survey was undertaken by the city Government after
the SC rejected its previous survey as it was not done
scientifically. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sheila
Dikshit has written to Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress
president Sonia Gandhi on the issue. Ms Dikshit in her
letter said that the Delhi Government will not only
protect the economy of the Capital but also protect
the environment by complying with the SC's order on
shifting of polluting units. In her letter she assured
them that the Government would protect the interests
of the factory owners and the labourers employed by
these units
