someone wrote to me saying FDI in housing sector could bring some good
news for housing for the poor. How true is that?

The News: FDI in housing sector.

There is opposition to this, as local building lobby, moneylenders want to
keep control over it. The argument against current housing sector is that
the builders' lobby control the sector with the help of corrupt politicians,
who help them to control the supply side of land, the most crucial input for
housing. The argument is valid.

The proponents of FDI in housing have been arguing that large institutional
investment in housing will make the sector transparent, and therby current
trend of land control will vanish. And this will help the sector to develop
housing for poor, a much needed activity in India.
