DJB plans connections for slums

Kavita Chowdhury

New Delhi, November 7:

As part of the comprehensive Water Reforms project, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has initiated a policy framework for ensuring improved water supply to the poor.

However, with the project now being on hold, the DJB says it will go ahead with implementing the improved services for the poor policy in any part of the city, irrespective of whether the 24X7 project is implemented.
Initially, an organisation Cure was assigned the task of conducting an analysis of the problems and the needs of ‘‘poor settlement areas.’’

The draft policy for providing water for the poor, proposes to provide individual connections or shared connections in these areas with either a common meter for 5-10 households or a meter for each household.

The policy proposes to first improve distribution on a short-term basis through standposts and regular tanker supply, and thereafter, to work on permanent connections. ............
