Re: [mpisgmedia] Habitat Jam

Dear Gita,

I was sent this url by a friend who is working in the Hydrabad Development Authority on issues that include Private- Public Partnership and NGO involvement in development. I am sckeptical of these sort of ventures because they are fashionable at the moment and cause more harm than good.

Not to make a case against the middle class or for that matter the West in general but the people who will take part in this conversation will be predominent sections of the two classes I just mentioned. The others will include some students who will belive that they are contributing to a better tomorrow and in this misplaced sense of generosity and philanthropy become part of a zeitgeist. My major bone of contention is that these arenas for pontification contribute nothing more than just gaudy reports and decontextualized universal Western centric solutions that are aimed at feeding a capitalist economy (in this case Canada).

They reinforce certain constructs of poverty by building on the gazes of the participating members and their charatable solutions. These solutions are normally aimed at ossifying the subjects of study (slum dwellers, poor people),draining them of all vitality so that the reciprocal contribution built on these faulty gazes perpetuate with a rather distorted view, what slums are for example and who their subjects are that inhabit them in the global south.
