Congress President Sonia Gandhi called for long-term
and synergistic partnership between the government,
civil society and the corporate sector to improve the
efficiency of public service and delivery systems.
The UPA chairperson stressed that globalisation and
social transformation were two sides of the
development coin. "We will do well not to forget that
the basic responsibility for delivering on social
basics is that of the state. You can supplement the
role of public agencies, not supplant it," she said at
a luncheon meeting of the visiting Board of Directors
of the UN Foundation established by media mogul Ted
Turner.
But for sustainable impact, investment in the social
sector should be as much a part of business activity
and corporate strategy as quality control and
research, Sonia said at the meeting attended, among
others, by Infosys Chief N.R.Narayana Murthy and
Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh
Ahluwalia.
